In the heart of the hip Surry Hills dining district is this vibrant locale serving Japanese-style pub food along with a generous selection of imported Japanese beer and sake. Owner and chef Kenji Maenaka has designed a menu of dishes to be shared in a casual atmosphere that combines meals, drinks and conversation. And it’s such a successful concept that there are no bookings allowed – patrons simply turn up as it’s just so busy!
The menu features the Japanese classics including sushi, sashimi and tempura, but you might have a little trouble getting specific, especially when trying to make your selection among the 120 different types of beer and sake! Go for the steamed pork belly with eggplant and house-blended miso served on magnolia leaves, and don’t forget the ‘Fujikama Snickers’, the chef’s very own special creation of peanut butter cake with chocolate custard, salted caramel ice cream, lemon curd and caramelised peanuts.

Travelling around the city and throughout the length & breadth of the state, each episode investigates the best places to stay, eat and play so you can make the most of your weekend.
After retiring from international cricket, Mike first appeared on Sydney Weekender back in 1994, and since then has loved every minute of it.
Over the years, Mike has hosted Sydney Weekender from all over New South Wales; from Eden in the south, to Tibooburra in the far northwest of the state.
One of Mike's favourite moments was when he had the chance to fly in a fully restored De Havilland Vampire fighter jet at the Temora Aviation Museum. "The pilot opened the throttle and sent the Vampire vertical," he says, "It was such a blast - the whole time I was thinking - I've got the best job in the world."
Sydney Weekender is on every Sunday at 5.30pm on the Seven Network in Sydney, and across N.S.W. & the A.C.T. on the PRIME Network. It's repeated a week later on 7TWO.
