Eating Out: Bennelong Restaurant and Bar at the Sydney Opera House

One thousand episodes means hundreds of Eating Outs, so it’s only fitting that Sydney Weekender is featuring the restaurant that’s been dubbed ‘the world’s most beautiful dining room’.

Bennelong Restaurant and Bar– located in the first pavilion of the Sydney Opera House– is a magical setting. From the uninterrupted views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, to the incredible restaurant design and features, Bennelong is an experience for any diner.

Headed up by executive and world-renowned Chef Peter Gilmore, Bennelong’s menu is one that celebrates Australian food history, and showcases an incredible range of Australian produce. Perhaps the most popular–and famous–dish currently on the menu is the beautifully presented Bennelong Pavlova, emulating the classic shape of Australia’s most famous icon. Inside is poached meringue and seasonal fruit. It is then topped with piped, double-whipped crème and Italian meringue, shaped like the sails of the Opera House.

Being on the harbour, the menu is seafood-heavy with red claw yabbies- served with buckwheat pikelets, cultured crème and lemon jam, wild caught barramundi with red speckled peas and a miso emulsion. Other must-try dishes include the XO scallops, the Tasmanian free-range chicken with black truffles, roasted chestnuts and root vegetables, and the beautifully plated salad of roasted heirloom carrots.

The restaurant has several dining spaces, from the main restaurant to the Cured and Cultured Bar, to the bar where you can enjoy just a drink and a light snack or dessert. Whatever the experience, it is guaranteed to be memorable.
