What to do on a trip to the Yass Valley

The Yass Valley is known for its’ history, heritage, thriving arts scene and fantastic food and wine. Several areas make up the region and Murrumbateman is a beautiful place to soak up a bit of everything that’s on offer.

Murrumbateman is in the heart of the Canberra District Wine Region and The Vintner’s Daughter is a great place to start your trip. Owner Stephanie Helm started making wine when she was nine years old at her parents’ winery and now owns her own business producing award-winning wines. The wines are made as naturally as possible, with all the fruit handpicked straight from the vine. They produce a number of different varieties including Riesling, Shiraz, Merlot and Viognier.

Four Winds Vineyard is another highlight of the area. They make great wine and serve it with delicious wood-fried pizzas — the perfect combination! They, too, grow the best grapes possible and hand-prune and pick over 29,000 vines to ensure the best quality. The vineyard here is 33 acres and they grow Shiraz, Riesling, Cabernet, Merlot and Sangiovese.

If you’re looking for a unique cellar door experience, check out Win’s Creek Meadery. These guys specialise in all things bees and have been producing mead or ‘honey wine’ for over 10 years. They’ve recently expanded the business to include craft beers and also have a restaurant on site serving up pizzas and local honey-themed goodies. The heritage building is also home to a ceramics space and regularly exhibits works from local artists.

One Tree Hill Alpacas is a great family friendly experience in the region. This working farm is home to 70 alpacas. The owners run a number of different tours that’ll get you hands-on and meeting the herd. Angela is the owner and is also a passionate artist. Her tours can also take you through her dye studio, where you can learn all about the fleece and dying yarn; she runs a number of creative workshops on site.
